The Springtime Home Bar

Girls just want to have fun!

I’m often asked what glassware I use at home when I entertain.  The answer is simple: mostly vintage with a twist of modern.  For example, I recently hosted my ladies bridge group for a fun evening of cards and dinner.  Since it’s finally spring, I livened up my dining room with spring tulips and chose simple pastel colored glasses for my sparkling water/sodas and wines.  I absolutely love vintage Sasaki Harmony glasses (the light blue ones) and have collected them for many years.  They are perfect for serving wine, water or a fabulous cocktail.  The lip to the glass is thin (which I prefer) and the glass feels silky smooth in the hand.  My green tall glasses are another mid-century pick and I find the color perfect for serving water or cocktails year-round.

Appetizers also don’t have to be “fancy”.  When my girlfriends come over to play cards, a simple bowl of nuts and some hummus and pita chips are perfect snacks while playing cards before dinner.  I love serving appetizers in these square silver rim serving dishes (new from Germany and available at The Hour).  When thinking of taking a hostess gift (in lieu of a bottle of wine), these serving dishes are the perfect (and affordable) touch.

Since it’s spring and we were playing cards, I chose not to serve a signature cocktail (although Sangria would have been fun!).  Sparkling blood orange juice and a Cotes de Provence (along with other wines) helped my home bar seem festive by adding that “pink” touch.  I also strongly believe in using whatever furniture you have in a room for your bar top.  In my dining room, my 18th century side table serves as a great spot for setting up a bar entertaining area.  Guests help themselves and truly feel at home.

Finally, one of my favorite tips:  When entertaining a group of friends, I like placing ice in a simple crystal bowl and using a julep strainer for scooping ice.  Since I’m busing playing cards, I don’t need to refresh the ice as often.  Now let’s play!!
